After spending a memorable day in Hungary we headed to capital of Czech Republic Prague. Being the most popular tourist destination in the eastern part of Europe it is often known as the capital of east Europe. We had to cover a distance of 525 km across three countries. Crossing borders in the Schengen area is very similar to crossing a toll plaza without any traffic. Rest remains the same. We had to drive through three countries i.e Hungary, Slovakia and almost touching Austria to get into the Czech Republic. After 3 hours ride we halted at Lednice, a quaint little village in the southern part of Czech Republic.
Lednice, a UNESCO world heritage site was famous for its wine yards which produces one of the best wines in the continent. There were wine barrels (unfortunately empty) just beside the parking area. We crossed the road towards the Lednice castle. The roads were empty as it was the beginning of summer and most of the shops were getting their supplies and not yet open. The Renaissance style castle was once seat of the prince of Lichtenstein for several decades. The bright yellow color of the castle wall was glowing in sun. We roamed around the garden to get a picture perfect view. The gardens adjacent to the castle were a treat to the eye. Foliage was in full bloom. After exploring the gardens, we proceeded to the lake behind the castle. After an hour’s exploration and innumerable photos it was time for lunch.
We were more than happy to sit in an air conditioned café while most locals preferred to enjoy sun. We had the best raspberry cake ever with a chilled beer. Pilsner, as I was told is the most popular beer in the country. The lady in the shop accepted Euros for payment as I did not carry any Czech Crowns. Earlier in the day I had to spend all the Hungarian forints in a super mart as they would not be accepted anywhere once we moved out of Hungary. I had bought a pack of unsalted peanuts and jelly beans for which I was criticized.
After the so called lunch break, we went to explore the alleys of the village. Each house had a distinct architectural style. I met up with some kids returning from their school. Unfortunately they could not speak English. So we had to communicate in gestures. In one of the narrow alleys, I found an ammunition like device. It looked like the ones used in the Game of Thrones. At around 2.30 pm in the afternoon we headed off towards the capital of east Europe, Praha (Prague).
A short stay in Lednice was great way to experience a Czech country side.
Distance from other cities:
- Bratislava- Lednice- 91 km
- Vienna- Lednice- 93 km
- Prague- Lednice- 253 km
- Budapest- Lednice- 287 km
Day trips can be organized from all the cities. The road connectivity of the village is excellent.
Free toilet is available at the castle. In Europe toilet charge usually ranges from 0.5- 1 Euro (40-80 INR).
Local wineries are renowned all over the world. Wine tasting tours can also be organised.
